How artificial intelligence works in breast cancer screening
Artificial intelligence, or AI, can find signs of cancer in women that radiologists can't always see when they look at the images after mammograms, even with dense breast tissue.
Because AI is a good tool for pattern recognition, and this means that AI finds signs of cancer that would perhaps only be found later by the woman herself or at the next screening.
AI instead of radiologist
Usually, screening images from mammography are seen by two independent specialists. But in the Capital Region, the last two years have replaced one radiologist with AI for low-risk images. Here, all mammography images are first sent directly to the AI machine, which divides them by risk. Those who are low risk, there is only one doctor who looks at them. If the doctor disagrees with the AI assessment, there are always two specialist doctors who look at it again. The remaining approx. 30 percent, where the AI finds there is a slightly higher risk, two doctors also look at.
The EU recommends including AI in breast screening.
